Types of Swimming Pools in Uganda
Swimming pools are classified into two main types: in-ground and above-ground. Additionally, there are several combinations of building materials and styles that may be used to create a unique distinction for each pool.
Swimming Pools: In-Ground vs. Above-Ground
In-ground and above-ground swimming pools have distinct advantages and disadvantages in terms of cost, durability, and accessibility, to name but a few. Consider the following factors when comparing an in-ground pool to an above-ground pool:
- Accessibility: An in-ground pool can be customized to meet the needs of individuals with varying levels of accessibility; for example, an in-ground pool can be made wheelchair accessible. On the other hand, an above-ground pool restricts entry to those who can safely utilize a ladder.
- Cost: In-ground pools are more expensive to install than above-ground pools due to the additional digging required and the particular concerns for any existing pipes, wires, or another wiring in the dig site. Additional costs include those associated with powering an in-ground swimming pool’s pump. If you add a bespoke design, luxurious surfaces, and features such as a waterfall or salt water system, the cost of an in-ground swimming pool can easily reach the tens of thousands of dollars. Above-ground pools are less expensive to install (some are even self-assembled), as they are pre-sized and may be shipped or otherwise delivered to a residence.
- Durability: Depending on the construction method, in-ground pools are designed to last more than 20 years. If your concrete in-ground pool is showing signs of wear and tear (cracks or erosion), it can be repaired and reconditioned to extend its life by another 20 years. In comparison, an above-ground pool is intended to be temporary and will not endure decades—its exposed sides make it more prone to damage, including punctures.
- Maintenance: With an in-ground pool, you must maintain the pumps, water, and surfaces regularly or you risk incurring costly repairs. If you are unable to undertake the maintenance yourself, you may be compelled to employ a professional. An above-ground pool requires less maintenance than an in-ground pool since it often lacks any electrical connection or peripheral equipment.
Different Types of In-Ground Pools in Uganda
When people talk about different types of in-ground swimming pools, they’re usually referring to the various building materials used to construct them, the most prevalent of which being concrete, fibreglass, and vinyl.
- Concrete pools are a type of in-ground pool that requires you to dig a hole, reinforce it with steel reinforcements such as rebar, and then pour in the concrete. With a concrete pool, virtually any design is possible. Following completion of the basic shape, the inside is traditionally completed with tile, plaster, or aggregate materials. With periodic resurfacing, a concrete pool can last more than 20 years. Concrete swimming pools can be installed almost anywhere and offer virtually limitless design possibilities. The usual cost of concrete pools in Uganda is between UGX 60m and UGX 120m.
- Fibreglass pools: A fibreglass pool is constructed by inserting a fibreglass pool shell into a hole drilled for one-piece construction. Additionally, they are coated with a gel covering that repels algae. If you want a fibreglass pool, you must select from one of the available designs, as manufacturing a custom mould is too expensive. A fibreglass pool has the greatest initial cost but the lowest maintenance costs. They are quick to install, but because they are manufactured from a mould, their shape is fixed (and they cannot exceed 16 feet in width). Bear in mind that fibreglass pools have a shorter lifespan than concrete, and refinishing a fibreglass pool can extend its life by 10–15 years.
- Vinyl-lined pools: To construct a vinyl-lined pool (also known as a vinyl-liner pool), workers dig a hole and apply a sand substrate, then lay down a one-piece vinyl liner that is attached around the circumference of the pool using what is called coping material. You must be cautious about sharp items in these pools since anything that punctures the vinyl will require the pool to be redone. A vinyl-lined in-ground pool has a life expectancy of around ten years, although this can be extended to eighteen years if the liner contains UV inhibitors (which mitigate sun damage). A vinyl pool is the least expensive to install and can be made in any size or form. A vinyl liner should be replaced every five to ten years due to the thin nature of the material, which can be damaged by animals, falling tree branches, and roughhousing children, among other things. Vinyl liner pools are economical. This type of pool is typically half the cost of a concrete pool to construct, and the price of a full block swimming pool ranges from Shs8m-50m, depending on its size and the materials used.
Various In-ground Pool Designs
There are hundreds of different in-ground swimming pool designs and shapes to pick from, based on the building materials you want and the pool’s intended location. The following are some of the most popular pool designs:
- Diving pool: A diving pool is equipped with diving boards and should be sufficiently deep to prevent a diver from colliding with the bottom.
- Freeform pools: These do not have a specific shape or design, but work in conjunction with the landscape and decking to produce any style and size the owner desires. The materials used to construct the pool are largely determined by the size of the freeform pool, but the majority of installers use concrete or gunite.
- Infinity pool: An infinity pool’s edge merges into the horizon, creating the illusion that the pool continues indefinitely or is similar to a waterfall. Infinity pools can only be constructed on gunite or concrete foundations.
- The lap pool is ideal for those who enjoy swimming as a form of exercise. While lap pools can be any length to fit within the confines of the homeowner’s land, they are typically at least 50 feet long and rectangular. These swimming pool designs are possible with virtually any material, however, fibreglass pool manufacturers restrict the length to something that can be transported to the pool site.
- The natural pool is created to resemble nature. Natural pools can be enhanced with a grotto, a sand-filled beach, water features, or artificial rocks. The pool materials you choose will be determined by the size and complexity of the surrounding landscaping.
- A plunge pool is a smaller version of a standard swimming pool that can be used for resting, wading, or exercise. They can be installed as an in-ground plunge pool or, if you choose a fibreglass or concrete plunge pool, they can be installed above-ground.
Above-Ground Pools
Above-ground pools are another popular option for a backyard pool. Along with the inexpensive cost, above-ground swimming pools are simple to install; they do not require complex landscaping or a lengthy process. Pools come in several styles and materials, and you can purchase them with built-in features such as lights or jet sprays.
Above-ground pools further reduce the chance of falling in, as the entry point is elevated above the ground—however, children and those who cannot swim should not be left unsupervised near any pool. Although above-ground pools are not the most aesthetically pleasing option, you can add a deck and still stay within your budget when compared to other types of pools.
Lap Pools
Lap pools are designed with a single function in mind: swimming laps. They are not the most family-friendly option, but they are ideal for swimmers who are exercising in a pool. They are rectangular and extremely lengthy, ranging between 30 and 70 feet. They normally do not have a shallow end; they are deep throughout, allowing for turns on either end.
If fitness is your major motivation for buying a pool, a lap pool may be a wise investment. This type of in-ground pool is long, narrow, and typically rectangular. It is designed specifically for swimming laps. Lap pools require less area and are therefore excellent for tiny yards. Most lap pools provide at least 40 feet of uninterrupted straight swimming space, which reduces the need for frequent turns. A lap pool’s width might be as short as 8 feet for a single swimmer. Considerations for construction are comparable to those for other in-ground pools.
Because there is less water to deal with, lap pools have cheaper annual maintenance expenditures than most other types of pools.
