Types of Borehole Water Pumps in Uganda

Water is extracted from boreholes using borehole pumps, which are small vertical holes dug into the ground. Groundwater levels can be lowered by using submersible borehole pumps, which can also be used for spray irrigation and pressure boosting.

Types of borehole pumps

There are several different types of borehole pumps that can be used to retrieve water from far beneath the surface.

Boreholes are typically narrow (just over 4”) due to the depths to which they are bored, and pumps are offered according to the size of the borehole, as well as capacity and pressure. As a result of their lengthened design, borehole pumps tend to be larger than normal pumps of comparable capacity.

How does a Borehole Pump Work?

A motor powers a shaft, which drives one or more impellers in the unit. The pump sits on top of the motor, with the motor at the bottom. All other pump designs have their intake and outlet at the top of the unit, which is unusual.

The suction strainer takes fluid into the first impeller, which then sends it to the diffuser. There’s a non-return valve that prevents fluids from returning to the pump if the pump has only one impeller. If the pump has many impellers, the liquid enters the suction and discharge casings multiple times before departing the pump through the non-return valve. In the case of sand handling, impellers are typical of closed or semi-open axial design.

Types of borehole pumps

  • Handpump Borehole – Machined Drilled Pump

Machine drilled handpump boreholes are those which are machined and professionally cased with steel or PVC casings, depending on the supervisor’s preferences. In Uganda, this type of drilling can reach depths of up to 100 meters (150 feet to 300 feet). There is also a gravel pack (stones) in the sides of this machine-drilled handpump borehole for filtering water that passes through the screen casing pipes in the well. According to Ugandan requirements, a borehole’s casing pipes can be 5in, 6in, or 7in in diameter. It is common to practise in Uganda to use stainless steel S.S. riser pipes and a handpump pump to pump water out of the borehole after it has been drilled and the casing is complete (India mark II for Uganda / U2 for Uganda). The use of galvanised iron GI (galvanised iron) material is strongly discouraged. This borehole can be used for a variety of purposes, including schools, factories, neighbourhoods, hospitals, and farms, among others.

  • Handpump – Hand-dug Borehole (Shallow Well)

 A shallow well or borehole is typically constructed utilising local techniques. In Uganda, this is always for low-budget consumers at a depth of 30 feet to 100 feet. The borehole’s diameter is 1000 millimetres.

For this borehole to work, it must be manually excavated beneath the surface until it reaches the bedrock. Due to the lower cost of this borehole compared to machine drilling, it is recommended for tiny Ugandan families who do not have access to safe and clean drinking water.

For the most part, the casing of a borehole is constructed from locally sourced materials such as clay burnt bricks, sand, cement, and aggregate stones. And cement. Rebars are used to cast a slab on top of the structure.

  • Solar pumping – borehole systems

A solar-powered submersible pump is part of a solar pumping borehole system, which is placed after drilling. The only difference between these and other types of boreholes is the pumping power source.

  • Electric Borehole – Machine pump

Machine dug electric boreholes are those which are drilled with the aid of an excavator using PVC or Steel casings, depending on the supervisor’s requirements. It’s possible to drill a borehole in Uganda that can reach a depth of 50 metres or more (150 feet to 300 feet).

For filtering water that passes through the screen casing pipes in the well, this machine-drilled handpump borehole is also filled with gravel pack (stones). According to Ugandan specifications, the diameter of the casing pipes of such a borehole might range from 5 inches to 7 inches.

Once the hole has been drilled, an electric submersible pump is installed and connected to electricity, it pumps water into the customer’s storage tank at the bottom of the well.

  • Electric Borehole – Hand Drilled pump

Using a hand-operated pump A shallow well, also known as a borehole, is dug using local methods and then outfitted with an electric submersible pump after the drilling is complete. In Uganda, this is always for low-budget consumers at a depth of 30 feet to 100 feet.
